Summary
Osteoporosis is associated with mild trauma fractures, disability and reduced quality of life. Osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis and interventions targeting people with osteopenia may delay or prevent bone loss progressing to osteoporosis. This investigation concludes that an exercise program incorporating high-impact, weightbearing activities, muscle strengthening exercises and balance training, targeting the proximal femur, and delivered partially supervised in community exercise facilities and at home, achieved modest benefits in terms of hip Bone Mineral Density.
